The Warhol: The Velvet Underground & Nico, Scepter Studio Sessions Exhibition

In 2022, a remarkable discovery was made by The Andy Warhol Museum Archives: rare recordings of the legendary band Velvet Underground from one of their earliest recording sessions. These groundbreaking sessions played a pivotal role in shaping their debut album, The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967)—a seminal work produced by the iconic Andy Warhol, who also crafted its unforgettable peel-away banana cover.

The upcoming Scepter Studio Sessions Exhibition promises to be a captivating experience for music aficionados and art lovers alike. Visitors will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the raw and innovative sound captured in these tapes. The exhibition will not only feature the mesmerizing music from these sessions but will also showcase a collection of striking photographs of the band taken during the vibrant years of 1966 and 1967. Additionally, attendees can look forward to viewing rare footage of the band from Warhol’s infamous Screen Tests, alongside a range of intriguing artifacts from the era of the recording.

My team has been given the exciting challenge of devising a comprehensive campaign aimed at promoting ticket sales and generating buzz for this extraordinary exhibition.

Although it didn't receive immediate, widespread praise, The Velvet Underground & Nico became one of the most influential records in music history.

For our campaign's typographic visual direction, we designed a handwritten headline font inspired by Lou's scanned lyric sheets, which he wrote during the Velvet Underground recording sessions.

Our OLV campaign showcased film clips from Andy Warhol's Screen Tests featuring members of the Velvet Underground. However, we encountered a significant challenge with the audio. Due to copyright restrictions, we were unable to include any of the Velvet Underground's music, even though the museum exhibition aimed to celebrate the discovery of the original tape recording containing many tracks from the legendary album The Velvet Underground & Nico. To overcome this obstacle, we got creative by developing a soundscape track based on the Velvet's original instrumentation. This track serves as a sonic homage to the band, capturing the spirit of their sound without directly covering their music.
